In the neighborhood they had nicknamed him Upa, after the character from the comic strip Patoruzú. By the early seventies, Luis Fernando had become a well-loved figure in the Chemistry Students' Union. He walked the faculty hallways with a copy of Marcha magazine tucked under his arm, always ready to help a classmate struggling with math.
Luis Fernando had a belly as round as Upa's, but unlike the cartoon character, he was someone with a great deal going on upstairs.
