Julio and Alejandro left the cinema and went straight to the bar. The film had been terrible, but the tickets were cheap, so neither of them minded.
—How's your little girl? —asked Alejandro, tossing a handful of peanuts into his mouth. —Hortensia is gorgeous and bright, as always. On my last trip I brought her back a doll, and her mother told me she sleeps with it whenever I'm away.
—You're such a family man, Julio. You've got family and the sea running through your veins.
Alejandro had chosen his words wisely. He knew that for his friend, family came first — and their fellow union members, seafarers like him, were family too. Julio heard those words just as he caught sight of their regular waiter passing by.
