Fredy took the bus to Belvedere neighbourhood. He got off one stop early to buy a soda so he wouldn’t arrive empty-handed. He spent so much time at the Artigas household that it was starting to embarrass him a little. Since he lived alone in Montevideo, his friend’s family would welcome him for lunch, for afternoon tea, and sometimes even for breakfast.
He arrived and sat at the table with all the family, including Mary, his friend’s sister. Mary was dark-haired, tall, and carried herself with a strength that matched her gaze. Fredy really liked her. Patiently, he waited for the right moment and, in a low voice, slipped her the invitation:
—Would you like to come to the dance with me?
—Mmm, I’ll think about it… —Mary replied, already planning which of her dresses she would wear.
