Winter in Buenos Aires was cruel. Luis Alberto made himself a tea and sipped it slowly, hoping it would warm him. He thought of a winter long ago in Paso de los Toros. The cold off the Rio Negro had been harsh too, but more bearable — perhaps because of the hearty meals, or the warmth of friends from the neighborhood.
For a moment, Luis Alberto let himself dream of a stew or a tripe soup from his mother's kitchen. He pulled the blanket over the bed and lay down to sleep.
