The sun of that September morning slipped through the crack in the window and woke Raúl. In a single motion, he was on his feet. He found his alpargatas and crossed the narrow hallway. Before reaching the dining room, he paused to watch his children sleeping. Then he set water to boil and broke a galleta de campaña into three pieces.
Hearing her father in the kitchen, little Valeria woke up and ran toward him, a bit unsteady on her feet.
—Stay with me, Daddy.
—Vale, Daddy has to go out and help build a more beautiful world.
It wasn’t the first time that Valeria, at three years old, had made such a request of her father. Nor was it the first time that Raúl, with the calm that defined him, lifted her onto his lap and told her about the importance of what he was about to do. They also talked about the flowers that bloomed in the gardens. On that, there was no doubt: both of them loved daisies best.
