In silence he made the fire, threw the meat on the grill, and roasted it. His silence broke when he called everyone to eat. Got no response. Called a second time. Still no response. His comrades, absorbed in conversation, didn't hear him. In a dry, hard tone, he called a third time. It was the last one.
Félix gathered his things and left. He walked from La Coronilla to Montevideo. His anger subsided little by little, with each step he took. It wasn't the first time he'd walked that far, though it was the first time he'd done it alone. A couple of years earlier, he had walked from Artigas to the capital with his fellow cane workers to demand their rights.
