Juan Pablo had moved to Buenos Aires full of expectations. Like any good architecture student, he walked the streets with his gaze lifted toward the buildings. Sometimes the city overwhelmed him, and then he would slip into a café and order a cortado.
One afternoon he got off the bus and saw, in the distance, a head of tangled curls that seemed strangely familiar. The sight carried him back to the high school steps in Montevideo. He hurried across the street even though the light was red.
“Carretero, is that you?” he dared to ask, tapping her shoulder.
“Colorado? What are you doing here?”
“Let me buy you a coffee and I’ll tell you.”
