She lifted little Eva Victoria into her arms, settled her gently into the stroller, and wrapped the scarf around her son’s neck. Suddenly, a silly face. They both laughed—but softly, so the baby wouldn’t wake.
On the way, Victoria and Anatole talked about autumn. She explained that in other places the seasons looked different. Victoria’s parents were from Lithuania, where castles fill with reddish leaves and lakes begin to freeze. So much time had passed since they'd last been together. She pictured them well-dressed, having tea in their large house. She missed them.
