Abel had Black and Guaraní blood. He lived in a community in Rivera, in a neighborhood where the houses had dirt floors. When he was a child, his mother, who had been a washerwoman, explained that his ancestors and those of his neighbors had been slaves.
— Every so often there were floods, the water came up to here —said Abel, pointing to his knee.
— And what did you do?
— I made paper boats to play with my brother Ariel.
